About this session
The financial materiality of climate physical impacts on businesses is increasingly evident to investors. Moreover, investors recognize that long-term value creation requires not only effective management of financial and physical capital but also human capital. Worker safety is critical to preserving human capital and, in turn, the long-term success of portfolio companies.
Just Resilience refers to the equitable distribution of resources and opportunities to strengthen resilience against climate impacts, ensuring that vulnerable and marginalized communities are not disproportionately affected. Research shows that the economic impact of rising temperatures due to heat is estimated at $100 billion in the U.S. alone and could quintuple by 2050. Globally, heat stress is projected to shrink gross domestic product by $2.4 trillion by 2030 under a 1.5°C warming scenario.
Institutional investors have started to engage companies and regulators on climate-related physical and human capital risks to protect portfolio value. Moreover, investment managers are aligning with client demand and developing sustainable, climate-resilient investments. Mitigating heat risks will not only improve workers’ well-being but also the long-term financial success of their investments.
